Defense Minister of Ukraine signed a decree on military terminology normalization

The Minister of Defence of Ukraine signed an order No.481 as of September 15, 2016 on the establishment of information and reference resource for standardized military terminology in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to paragraph 3.4 of the Strategic Defence Bulletin of Ukraine enacted by Presidential Decree No.240/2016 as of June 6, 2016 - for the purpose of amending the military terminology according to NATO standards in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine the Linguistic Research Center of the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is responsible for the design, functioning and content of information and reference resource of standardized military terminology.

According to the order of the Minister of Defence Ukraine signed on September 15, 2016, no later than November 1, 2016, the Department for Standardization, Codification and Cataloging together with the Linguistic Research Center of the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv shall develop the structure and provide content for the information and reference resource of standardized military terminology.

Information and reference resource of standardized military terminology in the Armed Forces of Ukraine was established for:

  • coordination of strategic communication when translating into foreign languages;
  • implementation of the Strategic Defence Bulletin of Ukraine to amend the military terminology according to NATO standards;
  • improving the process for the formation and use of foreign language terminology in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • streamlining and standardizing military terminology relevant toNATO in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • rapidly informing structural units of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and military command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine regarding development and standardization of new terminology in the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • formation and development of the necessary capabilities to provide linguistic support (including translation) to the Ministry of Defence Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
